The Inception of BSU’s Insignia
When we talk about the meaning of the logo Boise State University advertises, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is an institution that exudes creativity and a drive for excellence. It has a rich history, and we can’t talk about the meaning of its logo without mentioning a bit of the history of Boise State University. The Episcopal Church founded this public research institution in 1932. Located in Boise, Idaho, it was formed as an extension from St. Margaret’s School, founded in 1892.
When Middleton Barnwell founded Boise State University, he had in mind the vision of a unique university that will one day stand out. This started with its independence two years later with the move from St. Margaret’s Hall to a new location poised between Broadway Avenue and Capitol Boulevard: the south bank of the Boise River. It stands there to this day. Boise State University is more than your typical college, from its thriving athletic teams to its notable academic achievements over the years.
The Evolution of BSU’s Logo
Since its inception, Boise State University has done a lot of rebranding before settling for its current logo. However, something that has been consistent over the years is the simplicity of the logo of Boise State. It is fair to say that the university values its ability to deliver the message clearly and concisely, without a lot of noisy color, background, or font.
From 2002 to 2012, this logotype of Boise State incorporated the wordmark “BOISE STATE BRONCOS” written in white on a blue banner and surrounded by an orange trim. This logo shows that it is okay not to opt for an image as your logo, but stylized texts can do the job as well. In search of a little adjustment, the insignia of Boise State modified to a lighter blue banner with the slanted double-lined wordmark “BOISE” and “STATE” still in white.
Wordmark Changes to the BSU logo
While the previous design eliminated the word “BRONCOS” altogether, the next design saw it brought back again and incorporated into the lettering style of the Boise State University. Featuring a double-lined wordmark, the “BOISE STATE” was written in orange at the top while the “BRONCOS” was at the bottom in white, resting on a blue background.
However, the ultimate goal was simplicity and sophistication, and this was achieved in 2013. Anyone can readily recognize this logo of Boise State, which is still in use to date as it has a compelling symbol that both students and other audiences can identify with. The letter “B” sits in blue on top of the wordmark “BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY,” also written in blue. The “B” has an orange trim.
If we were to interpret the Boise State logotype, we would say, “a logo that tells you that it doesn’t take much to exude class and pass the right message to your audience. It is strong, easily identifiable, and singular, while still being the voice of Boise State University.”
This logo inspires us to create simple designs that exude excellence in all ramifications and that’s what we are all about at Black Mansion. We breath life into your brand’s logo and design in more ways than one with iconic designs that will stand the test of time.
